Tottenham ambitions bigger than beating Arsenal, says Kane

Tottenham striker Harry Kane insists his side s ambitions go far beyond wanting to finish above Arsenal in the Premier League.

Mauricio Pochettino s side are four points behind leaders Chelsea at the top of the table, having amassed a club record of 74 points this season.

A victory over Arsenal in Sunday s north London derby will guarantee that Spurs will finish above the Gunners in the top flight for the first time since the 1994-95 season and inflict a damaging blow on their rivals hopes of a top-four finish.

Kane, however, says their priority is on closing the gap to Chelsea and keeping their title hopes intact.

For the fans, it would be great to finish above Arsenal and actually do it by winning against them but, from our point of view, we ve got big…

Atletico Madrid interested in Telles

Atletico Madrid are said to be monitoring the possibility of signing Alex Telles from Portuguese giants Porto, according to AS. The 26 year old made the jump over to the former Champions League winners back in 2016 from Galatasaray, and since then he’s been able to establish himself as a solid star in the first team. Of course, there are always bigger and better deals out there, with Diego Simeone reportedly looking towards Telles as a long term replacement for Filipe Luis.

It is strongly expected that Luis will be leaving Atletico at the end of the season, and Telles could fit straight into their plans. It’s smart of Simeone to make these plans now and several clubs around Europe are believed to have already voiced their interest in Telles, who seems to be going from stren…

Bayern Munich have confirmed they will not appeal against UEFA’s decision to ban their fans from the away leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

The German champions were handed a suspended two-year punishment after supporters let-off fireworks during their group game in Copenhagen in October and that was triggered after similar offences during their recent last-16 tie in Rome against Lazio.

Bayern said in a statement on the club’s official website: “After a thorough examination of the situation, FC Bayern has decided not to lodge an appeal with UEFA against the verdict, according to which the German record champions will have to play the away leg of the upcoming Champions League quarter-finals without their fans.

Abidal retires from international football

Eric Abidal has followed former France team-mates Samir Nasri and Franck Ribery in announcing his retirement from international football.

The defender, who left Ligue 1 side Monaco to join Greek outfit Olympiacos last month, was left out of France s World Cup squad and has brought his 10-year international career to an end at the age of 34.

Abidal, who underwent a liver transplant in 2012 following the discovery of a tumour in 2011, featured in three major tournaments for his country and played in the 2006 World Cup final defeat against Italy.

However, following his omission from the squad for the 2014 tournament, Abidal feels the time is right to call time on his Les Bleus career.

It is time to close this door, Abidal told Catalan radio station RAC1.

Balotelli unconvinced by England threat

Striker Mario Balotelli feels Group D rivals England will be no match for Italy at the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

The Milan striker could lead the line for Cesare Prandelli s side when the nations meet in Manaus on June 14 for their World Cup opener.

In what will be Balotelli s first outing at the tournament, he dismissed any chance of England winning the competition or posing a threat to Italy.

The former Manchester City man believes that Italy have more experience among their squad and the capability to spring a surprise in South America.

I don t look at England as a team that can win the World Cup, The Daily Mail quotes him as saying.

They have some good players, but they are no real rivals for Italy.

I am not saying that Italy are favou…

Zamorano backs Ronaldo to step up in Champions League final

Cristiano Ronaldo has proven himself the man for the big occasion this season and could decide the Champions League final, former striker Ivan Zamorano has said.

The Portugal star has scored 16 goals – including a hat-trick in the quarter-final against Wolfsburg and goals in each leg of the last-16 tie with Roma during Real Madrid s run to the final this term, putting him one shy of his own scoring record in a single season, set in their victorious 2013-14 campaign.

And Zamorano, who won La Liga and the Copa del Rey in a four-year spell at the Santiago Bernabeu, expects Ronaldo – scorer of the winner in the 2-1 Clasico defeat of Barcelona in April – to be the decisive player in next week s final versus Atletico Madrid.

He will be the man in charge of makin…

Crouch set for new Stoke deal

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has hinted that Peter Crouch could sign a new contract at the Britannia Stadium,.

The 33 year old scored his first Premier League goal of the season in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Queens Park Rangers, while he also provided the assist for Mame Biram Diouff’s eleventh minute opener in the same game.

Crouch moved to Stoke in the summer of 2011, and has since made over a hundred league appearances for the club, something he has not achieved at any of the other clubs he has represented so far in his career.

QPR boss Harry Redknapp, who targeted signing the striker during the summer, has suggested that he may again move for him in January though Hughes is set to offer him the opportunity to remain with the Potters.

Former Arsenal midfielder Diaby confirms retirement

Former Arsenal and France midfielder Abou Diaby confirmed his retirement on Monday after a career riddled by injuries.

Diaby, 32, last played competitively in August 2016, when he lined up for Marseille in Ligue 1.

However, injury woes disrupted and cut short his career, which included nine and a half seasons at Arsenal – the club he arrived at from Auxerre in January 2006.

I put an end to my professional career, Diaby told RMC Sport.

It was time. For a number of years, it has been difficult for me to come back. I had a lot of physical problems.

Thanks for the memories,

We re all wishing you the very best following your retirement
